Chair of Russian and Slavic Languages

The Chair of Russian and Slavic Languages was founded in 2006 as a result of the merger of the Chairs of Modern Russian Language and Practical Russian Language. The history of the creation of BSU and the history of the Russian language chairs are closely related. Both of them went through all stages of establishment and development of that educational institution side by side.

In the early March of 1935 Russian State Two-Year Teaching Institute, the cornerstone of BSU, was established in Yerevan. The first Head of the Institute was M.M. Shiukova, Honored Teacher of the Armenian SSR, who, together with A. A. Galustov, Associate Professor, Deputy Director of Academic Affairs, made great contributions to the creation and formation of the institute. The newly opened institute was going to train teachers of Russian language and literature. The preparatory courses began on March 20, 1935, and in August of 1935 the institute welcomed its first students.

The Chair of Russian Language was founded in 1936. R. L. Melkumyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, was appointed as a Head of Chair. In a short period, he brought together highly qualified and dedicated professionals of the field. As a result of their selfless work, a new generation of young Russian scholars received professional training and entered the sphere of pedagogy. Among them were M. Kuchkulyan, M. Khalatova, I. Vardapetova, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor R. Manucharyan, Associate Professors J. Gharibyan, E. Bagaturova, and many others. Together with a number of their colleagues they are rightly considered to be the founders of the Armenian Theoretical and Practical Russian Studies. Due to them, Armenian science has developed its dignified presence and benefited from participating in various linguistic and methodological conferences and scientific publications. The staff has made considerable contribution into the fields of Theory of Russian, Russian Teaching Methodology and Comparative Linguistics. The Chair has been headed by G. K. Samvelyan, Professor, Candidate of Philological Sciences, A. O. Markosyants, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Professor, N. S. Chirkinyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, L. E.  Markosyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, N. I. Tatkalo, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor. Together with a number of their colleagues they are rightly considered to be the founders of the Armenian Theoretical and Practical Russian Studies.

The Chair of Practical Russian Language was created with the active participation of N. K. Arakelyan, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, in 1979. This was resulted by the structural reforms at the university in 2006, since the Section of Practical Russian was included in the Chair of Russian and Slavic Linguistics. Since 2018 the Chair has been renamed to Chair of Russian and Slavic Languages.
