BSU Chair of Physical Education and Civil Defense was founded in 1949. According to the archive documents it used to have 4 lecturers. The Head of the first Chair was Margarita Gutova (graduate of Baku Institute of Physical Culture).
During over 70 years of existence, the Chair has developed both in terms of personnel policy and the volume of the activities carried out. During different periods of its operation, different Laboratory Assistants, Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, Associate Professors, Professors and PhD lecturers have worked in the Chair, and have carried out educational, scientific, sports and organizational activities, promoting healthy and safe lifestyle and creative longevity of future specialists.
The main goal of the Chair of Physical Education and Civil Defense is to introduce students of all specializations to the basics of healthy lifestyles, independent physical activities, civil defense and emergency, to promote their sports orientation, as well as to prepare them to withstand various natural and man-made disasters.
The Chair of Physical Education and Civil Defense has also achieved great results in student sports field: BSU teams have won various sports nominations in republican student championships for many times.
Currently, the Chair carries out educational and scientific-methodical activities within the framework of the courses "Physical Education", "Issues of Emergency and Civil Protection".
The Chair also has athletics, volleyball, basketball, and table tennis sports oriented groups.
Additionally, it carries out joint research with specialists of the relevant spheres from foreign HEIs and organizes joint thematic scientific conferences. Foreign specialists in physical education, sports, civil defense and emergency management are involved in teleconferences.
Currently 7 highly qualified specialists are engaged in the Chair: 3 Lecturers, 2 Senior Lecturers, 1 Associate Professors and 1 Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor.
