Chair of Pedagogy and Language Teaching Methodology

About Establishment and Activities of Chair

The academic programs of “Pedagogy” profession started to be developed long ago. Still in November 1881, when Armenia had been under the Russian rule for more than 50 years, the Tsarist authorities noted that they were not controlling young Armenians’ education and upbringing. So, not even waiting for the next year's budget, the government decided to establish a Tsarist Teaching Seminary to train Russian language teachers for local schools in Armenia.

Initially, the Seminary was operating at rich Armenians’ houses, later on, in 1903-04 a special building was built on Astafyan street (currently known as the ''Black Building'' of YSU, Abovyan street). The Seminary was a success. The fame of the institute, the number of its professions and students were gradually increasing among the not so many professional educational institutions in Armenia. The teaching and quick learning methodology of the Russian and foreign lanuguages was inherited from the Russian educational institutions, particularly from the Lazarev Institute which was famous as an Oriental Language Teaching Center. The Seminary operated till the foundation of the first Republic of Armenia, although during the First World War it moved to the city of Armavir in Krasnodar. The bad relations between Russia and Armenia suspended the Seminary’s future in Armenia. However, the geopolitical issues made it impossible for both the First and the Second Republics of Armenia to be managed without the Russian Language Professional Teaching Center, hence courses lasting from six months to two years were periodically established. On the 4th of February, 1935, two-year courses of Russian opened later on to be reorganized into a pedagogical institute.

The Center was renamed to Yerevan State Russian Pedagogical Institute after V. Ya. Brusov in 1940. Since its foundation it has been preparing teachers of Russian language and literature for secondary schools. The Institute had one department with four chairs: Chair of Russian language, Chair of Russian Literature, Chair of History and Chair of Pedagogy. In 1937 one more chair (Chair of General History and History of USSR Nations) was added. The members of the Chairs were cooperating with schools (through a deployment system) to provide pedagogical-methodological support. Only two of eight members of the Chair of Pedagogy and Psychology were working on a full-time basis, the rest were employed on a part-time basis, including the Head of Chair. On March 1, 1948, a decision was adopted to found the Foreign Language Pedagogical Institute on the ground of the Foreign Language Faculty of Yerevan Russian Pedagogical Institute. A. Isahakyan was assigned as a Head. To meet the increasing demand of Russian and foreign language teachers, the Councel of ASSR Ministers passed a decision on October 3, 1961, to establish the Russian and Foreign Language Pedagogical Institute on the basis of the Faculty of Russian and Foreign Languages of Yerevan State University. The Institute started to operate in January 1962. It was renamed to Yerevan State Foreign Language Institute after V. Brusov in 1993; to Armenian State Foreign Language University after V. Brusov on March 17, 1995, and to Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov in 2000 by the decision of the RA Government.

In 2001 following the decision of the RA Government, the Institute was granted a status of university and named “Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov”. On April 30, 2014, the HEI was reorganized into “Yerevan State Brusov University of Languages and Social Sciences” SNCO according to the Government's decision. Following the decision 8.06.2017 N 456, “Yerevan State Brusov University of Languages and Social Sciences” SNCO was reorganized into a Foundation.

Combining its methodology and experience with the methodological heritage of the Tzarist Teaching Seminary, the University has transitioned to a new educational system and continues to put all efforts for the integration into higher vocational education area in Europe. Throughout its existence, the key academic priority of the HEI remains the preparation of pedagogues. Being the main provider of Russian and foreign language pedagogues to the schools of Armenia and Near Diaspora for decades, Yerevan State Russian and Foreign Language Pedagogical Institute after V. Ya. Brusov created and regularly developed the program based on which the Armenian methodology of teaching a foreign language was formulated. Many graduates have defended their Dissertations on Foreign Language Teaching Methodology, Pedagogy, School Psychology. Various conferences initiated by the University touch upon the issues of language teaching methodology. The University has published a number of language textbooks for schools, monographs, collections, which include articles and papers on teaching methodology.

Currently, BSU is recognized as an internationally preferable HEI providing higher professional education in Linguistics, Pedagogy, social and intercultural fields. If in the Soviet times the teaching programs were developed and provided to the HEIs of the Republic, today the HEIs are free in the development, revision and improvement of their professional teaching systems. It is worth mentioning that the University lecturers continue to carry out scientific, methodological, research and academic activities in the country. They have been among the leading scientists of the Republic for many years and have huge investment in the theoretical and practical aspects of language teaching, creating many textbooks and dictionaries. This process, being important in the HEI-school networking, allows to link the pedagogical education tightly with the school. The scientific research of the lecturers of the Chair serve ground for the development of new academic programs for foreign language teachers.

The strategic plan of the Chair derives from BSU strategic plan for 2018-2023 and aims to effectively implement the University’s strategic priorities. The EQF, Dublin Descriptors, ESG, CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Learning Teaching Assessment), EPOSTL, the appropriate academic programs of Armenian, European, American and CIS universities, the resolutions of the RA and publications on the reconstruction and improvement of the school and university systems were have been well studied.

Based on Deming's approach “If you are unable to describe what you implement as a process, you are unaware of what you are doing'', the Chair mapped its own functions, the lecturers’ functions together with the components of the academic programs, and created Chair procedures which facilitated the process.

The Chair of Pedagogy and Language Teaching Methodology performs educational activities on the 6th (BA academic program), 7th (MA academic program) and 8th (Ph.D. academic program) levels of NQF of the RA.
