The Department of Armenian Studies was formed in 1967, first as Chair of Armenian Language and Literature, then as Chair of Armenian Studies. Later, it was expanded and renamed to the Department of Armenian Studies. In different years they were supervised by professor E. Khondkaryan, F. Khlghatyan G. Gevorgyan. Since 2023, the duties of the head of the department will be performed by candidate of philological sciences, associate professor D. Gyurjinyan.
The department works as a part of the translation faculty of the university and conducts various compulsory and elective courses at all faculties of the university.
Taking into consideration the significance of the Armenian language in rooting national identity and values, developing intercultural and professional communication skills, the department offers a number of coursesin the Armenian language, Armenian literature, Armenian history and national culture, as well as teacher training courses.
Goals: Contribute to the development of intercultural competencies through the development of effective language communication skills, the formation of historical thinking and knowledge of national culture.
Mission: Through teaching Armenian Studies, contribute to the preparation of professional and competitive specialists in the labour market,who have the skills to demonstrate appropriate verbal behavior in different situations.
Functions of the Chair:
- Carry out educational, academic and research activities;
- Partake in the development of Academic Programs, Standards and Plans;
- Provide professional expertise, consultations, opinions on dissertations, teaching-methodological manuals, monographs, articles and other scientific-methodological works;
- Ensure continuous professional development and training of the academic staff of the Chair;
- Create educational and methodological literature, prepare collections, monographs, teaching-methodological manuals and textbooks for publication.
