NEW METHODS OF TEACHING GRAMMAR AND METALINGUISTIC VERBALIZATION OF LEARNERS

The sixth international colloquium of the GreC Network is a part of the continuation of the research devoted to the contextualization of the grammatical descriptions that has been pursued since 2011. https://methodal.net/Reseau-Grammaires-et-contextualisation

It is known that grammar teaching occupies an important place in teaching/learning of the first or foreign languages: for some, like French, it is still very often pivotal, for others, as English, it is more limited. But grammatical activities are transversally present, and the recurring question is how to make them contribute to the efficiency of learning and to the mastering of both oral and written languages. And we know how essential this mastering is for academic success, professional development and formation of democratic citizens open to world.

This meeting of GreC to be organized in Armenia which is an area particularly open to plurilingualism invites to share experiences and practices of language teaching in primary education  as well as  for the minority, neighborhood or ''foreign'' languages. So, it refers to all language teachers and, therefore, any topic can be discussed.

However,  the reflexivity will be prioritized. Indeed, activities promoting ''metalinguistic decline'' are potentially common to all these teachings and they are characterized as activities of simple transmission of grammatical descriptions or automatizaton and memorization, to which they are complementary. They aim to explain the epilinguistic intuitions of learners about the functioning of a given language, in its discursive (form of textual genres), notional-lexical (for example, the expression of time), morphological and syntactical dimensions. It is generally expected that these verbalizations and their discussion between learners and a teacher are likely to accompany the results.

Teachers also need to ''verbalize the grammar'': by transposing the science-based documents of language or pedagogical grammars of reference used (often traditionalists), by explaining the nature of the difficulties encountered by learners or their origin (in particular the ''interferences''), by relating the studied language to others and even by inventing closer descriptions of learners' metalinguistic knowledge acquired during language (mother/first/of instruction) lessons, by creating examples of good practice.

This colloquium is open to any research work, any experimentation report, any good ''practice'' on the grammatical activities and the multiple discourses that are used in the classroom.

Proposals may include:

  • new principals and new ways of grammar teaching in the first/mother languages;
  • new principals and new ways of teaching of the grammar of foreign languages (in particular at CEFR levels A1 and B2 ) ;
  • relationships between scientific descriptions of languages, pedagogical grammar descriptions and those created ad hoc by teachers in response to learners' specific difficulties;
  • reflective metalinguistic activities (such as the conceptualization exercises by H. Besse) ;
  • analysis of learners' metalinguistic discourse(=not reproducing studied grammatical discourse) and the ways of improving them;
  • interrupted verbalization of teachers and systematic grammatical teaching;
  • activities linking the descriptions of different languages to the ''comparative'' observations of learners and teachers;
  • methodological relationships to be established between communicative activities (for example, studying reading strategies) and grammatical systematization activities.

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION:

-The proposals must be unpublished.

- The summary should not exceed one page and should be followed by eight or ten keywords. Bibliographical references can be listed on the second page.

- The third page should contain the following information: summary title, first and last name, affiliation, phone number, address and e-mail. 

- The candidates are invited to submit a proposal for fifteen-minute presentation report (followed by a ten minute discussion).

- The proposals will be submitted to the authors, then to the scientific committee. The modifications and corrections might be applied to meet the methodological and editorial requirements of the conference.
