History of the Chair

The Chair of Literary Studies was established on 1 September, 2007 as a result of unification of the Chair of Russian Literature and the Chair of Foreign Literature. Since February 2011 the Chair has been run by Shoushanik Tamrazyan. “Ashxarhamas”, a center of Literary Readings was established then.
Today the Chair comprises of the departments of Russian Literature (chair- Sonya Davtyan), French Literature (chair-Ani Janikyan), English Literature (chair- Ella Asatryan) and German Literature (chair- Elena Etaryan).

The Chair of Russian and Foreign Literature was established in September 1935. For 20 years the Chair was headed by ASSR Honorary Professor of Science, Associate Professor Z. Yasinskaya. In 1957, when the Russian Pedagogical Institute after V. Zhdanov was united with Yerevan State University, the Chair was divided into sections that combined the Russian and Foreign Literature Chairs of Yerevan State University.

In 1962 the Russian Pedagogical Institute after V. Brusov was established, with the respesctive Chairs of Russian Literature and Foreign Literature. Throughout the years the Chair of Russian Literature was run by the Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor K. Ayvazyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor M. Mirza-Avagyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor E. Nuralov, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor S. Daronyan, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor S. Gullakyan,
Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor M. Amirkhanyan and Candidate of Philological Sciences,  Associate Professor E. Aleksanyan.
The Chair of Foreign Literature was run by the Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor S. Soghomonyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor G. Majaryan, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor L. Samvelyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor A. Gasparyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor E. Nuralov, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor E. Karabegova and Candidate of Philological Sciences E. Etaryan.
